Cerro Blanco & Puerto Hondo

Itinerary

In the morning we leave the city and drive west towards Salinas to visit the Cerro Blanco Forest reserve (approximately 6000 ha). A private reserve, Cerro Blanco preserves an important stand of tropical dry forest near Guayaquil, one of the few still remaining that boasts an impressive variety of birds (more than 190 species) such as the Guayaquil Green Macaw, the Crane Hawk and the Snail Kite. The landscape here is dominated by towering ceiba trees. The wildlife is almost as impressive as the bird life. In addition to the avifauna there are numerous mammals that inhabit the area, though harder to see, there is always a chance of viewing the howler monkeys, ocelots, puma, jaguar and peccaries, amongst others. Your guide will help you spot wildlife and birds in the reserve.

After a good look round, and visiting the reserve's wildlife rescue center and organic farm, we will continue to Puerto Hondo. The Puerto Hondo Environmental Interpretation Centre is located adjacent to a relatively intact remnant of Gulf of Guayaquil Mangroves in the Reserva de Produccion Faunistica de Manglares el Salado (RPFMS) of 5,309 hectares, a part of the national protected area system of Ecuador. The majority of the RPFMS is made up of mangrove forests, with small patches of dry tropical forest and savannahs. A total 79 bird, 12 mammal, 7 amphibian, 20 fish, 18 mollusk and 13 crustacean species have been registered so far. A small population of individual Saltwater Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) has been found within the reserve. After you have explored this fascinating mangrove ecosystem during a canoe trip accompanied by herons, pelicans and frigate birds you return to your car and back to Quito.
