Climbing Antisana

Antisana is ideal for every mountain climber, who wants to experience a technically demanding tour and likes to be off the beaten track. The volcano lies a bit hidden in the east Ecuadorian mountains and therefore is not very easy to spot. Once on the peak, one has a technical, glaciated climb ahead. As a result, few intrepid souls can claim Antisana's summits. But for those who do, the panoramic views will be breathtaking. Ask any experienced Ecuadorian climber, and he will say that the Antisana volcano is one of his favorites and well worth the effort. Since 1993 120.000 hectares including the Antisana Volcano are declared the Reserva Ecologica Antisana, an ecological reserve that represents seven life zones ranging from the Andean highlands down to the rainforest.

Note: The itinerary of the adventure tour can be changed by the guide due to security reasons (climate, conditions etc) as well as by the national park administration due to changing national park rules. Nevertheless the security and the interest of the participants will always have first priority.

If you make reservations for a group, for several concurrent services or on certain dates we are usually able to offer special prices on these occasions – Please contact us!

Itinerary
Day 1: Quito – Antisana Basecamp

In the morning you leave Quito 4x4 vehicle towards the eastern Cordillera to the little town of Pintag. From here you follow a country road through the Andean highland to the Lagoon Santa Lucia where you will set up your camp at the western flank at ca. 4300m altitude. The lagoon lies in the wide valley between the Antisana and the smaller mountain Antisanilla in its West. In the afternoon you will do a hike in the area – look out for the Condor as these huge birds can be spotted here frequently – before you prepare your gear for the climb and rest after an early dinner. -/L/D

Day 2: Antisana climb - Quito
At about midnight you have a little breakfast and prepare for the climb. According to the conditions you take the “old” route towards the saddle between South and central (highest) peak and from here climb the central peak or the “new” more direct route from the base camp up the steep slopes to the central peak. On a clear day you have spectacular views on the surrounding Andes and down to the Amazon rainforest in the east from the summit. The climb to the summit takes usually about 7-8 hours, descending back to the camp another 3-4 hours. Here you will have a short rest period before you break camp and drive back to Quito.
